CHEYENNE — A bill that would require courts to release the names of people charged with sexual assault is headed to the full House for debate.
The House Judiciary Committee backed the bill in a 5-4 vote on Monday.
The bill would allow the release of defendant’s names as soon as they are charged with sexual assault, the same as any other felony. It’s sponsored by Republican Rep. Sam Krone of Cody.
Currently, the name of someone accused of sexual assault can only be released after a judge determines that there’s sufficient evidence to send the case to district court.
