Spokane wants more study of coal trains

A train hauling coal to British Columbia heads north out of Seattle between office buildings, condos and the downtown waterfront Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2012. The Seattle City Council has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the development of coal-export terminals in Washington state over concerns about increased train traffic and potential harm to health and the environment. Tuesday's vote comes as the federal government is reviewing the first of at least six port facilities proposed in Washington and Oregon to ship coal from the Powder River basin of Montana and Wyoming to thirsty markets in Asia. If all the facilities are built, at least 100 million tons of coal a year could carry coal in trains through the Northwest before being shipped to Asia.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane City Council has unanimously approved a resolution requesting further study of the effects of coal trains moving through the city.

The resolution requests that the potential impacts of the trains to Spokane’s public health, safety, economy, traffic, and air quality be included as a part of the project’s Environmental Impact Study. It also seeks a hearing in Spokane for any project that may cause significant increases in rail traffic in the city.

Spokane County is a major rail crossroads and would be the entry point for all coal coming into Washington from Montana and Wyoming.
