Statue of giant tortoise living on at SD park

Posted 7/11/12

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The likeness of a giant 130-year-old tortoise that died last summer is living on at Reptile Gardens in Rapid City.

A life-size bronze statue of Methuselah was unveiled at the park Tuesday. Hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the life of the 500-pound tortoise that was born in 1881. Giant tortoises generally live about a century.

Park spokesman John Brockelsby says the 160-pound statue was made using a mold of the tortoise’s body, making it as lifelike as possible.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard declared Tuesday “Go Slow Day” to honor Methuselah.
