Tim Reed was tragically killed in a traffic accident on Friday January 18, 2013, near Williston, N.D. Timothy Charles Reed was born May 26, 1965, in Billings, MT. to Charlie and Audrey (Appel) Reed. He grew up in Billings, attended Highland Elementary, Lewis & Clark Junior High, and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1983.
During high school he lettered in football, played first chair baritone in Symphonic Band, was president of Key Club and a member of the first group of Senior Advocate.
Following high school he attended MSU Bozeman, where he was a member of SAE Fraternity. He received an associate of arts degree from Sheridan College in 1988 and graduated from Chadron State in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.
Following an internship with the Federal Marshall’s office while in college, he was then hired as a special agent for the U.S. Department of Interior, Office of the Inspector General. His career in criminal justice took him from Denver to St. Paul to Billings, back to Denver and home to Billings again in 2009. Tim was highly respected in his profession and received numerous awards on regional, state and national levels for his investigative work. He was additionally trained as a firearms instructor and armorer.
He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and actively involved in its annual fundraising auction. Tim was an avid game and fowl hunter, loved fishing the Tongue River and Willow Creek and any other body of water he was near. He enjoyed floating the Yellowstone River in his riverboat, an occasional beer at Angry Hanks, enjoyed Mustang games and was a Minnesota Vikings fan. He made friends easily both young and old and always had a story to tell. He was a collector of c1assic military vehicles and other collectible items on wheels. Tim enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and riding his Harley, and spent many weekends preparing his Louisiana shrimp boils at summer parties.
He is survived by; his parents, Charlie and Audrey, brother Jeff Reed (Tiffany Garner) of Billings, aunts and uncles Bill Appel, Gillette, WY, Eileen (Bill) Suchor, Pine Haven, WY, and Myrtle (Bill) Riggle, Mission, TX as well as cousins Angela Kennedy, Tiffany Cholez, Melanie Sylte, Brett Suchor, Jennifer Green, Anna Savage, Charlie and Lester Riggle and Jennifer Kaiser and their spouses and families. He is also survived by his black Lab Harper and a host of friends and colleagues.
Tim was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, an aunt, Sherry Appel, and his beloved dog Amber.
In lieu of flower, memorials may be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Billings Golden “K” Kiwanis Foundation, Billings Animal Shelter or charity of choice.
A vigil service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7 PM at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. A Funeral Mass celebrating Tim’s life will be held Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 12 noon at St. Patrick Co-Cathedral with Rite of Committal following at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park.
