UW receives $20M grant to study water

LARAMIE — The University of Wyoming has received a $20 million, five-year grant to study water resource issues.
It’s the single largest grant in UW’s history and comes from the National Science Foundation.
Researchers and educators from four UW colleges and 11 departments will take part in the water study.
UW’s previous record research award was a $16.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for biomedical research in 2009.
Bill Gern is vice president for research and economic development at UW.
He says the new grant will allow for unprecedented levels of research into hydrological systems, above ground and below.
The goal of the research is to gain a better understanding of how such water systems respond to changes, such as pine beetle outbreaks, climate variability and shifts in land use.
