Utah man sentenced to over 9 years in robberies

Posted 3/13/13

POWELL, Wyo. — A Utah man who pleaded guilty to holding up banks in four states has been sentenced to over nine years in federal prison.

The Powell Tribune reported that U.S. District Judge Scott Skavdahl of Casper sentenced 32-year-old Joshua Beckstead Thursday.

The judge also ordered Beckstead to pay back the more than $14,000 he stole from the banks in Cody and Cheyenne as well as Montana, Oklahoma and Utah.

The robberies happened last May and June.

Beckstead was in jail in Utah for allegedly passing forged checks when a judge allowed him out on May 8 to go to the dentist. He never showed up or returned to jail. He started the robbery spree the following week by holding up a credit union in Ogden, Utah. He was arrested in Bismarck, N.D.
