Victim stabbed 54 times in rampage

MISSOULA — A registered violent offender suspected of killing a Dixon-area man and slashing his wife’s throat during a drug-fueled rampage told investigators he stabbed the man repeatedly and beat him with a rifle because he would not die, a prosecutor said in court documents.
Sanders County Attorney Robert Zimmerman made the claim while seeking permission Monday to file charges directly to District Court against Nathan Lee William Calvert, 32, of Missoula.
Calvert was previously charged with deliberate homicide in Justice Court.
The documents state that Calvert said he had been hallucinating while smoking synthetic marijuana known as spice and did not know why he attacked Doug Morigeau, 61.
Zimmerman’s court documents indicate he wants to charge Calvert with deliberate homicide in the Dec. 6 death of Morigeau and attempted deliberate homicide for injuries suffered by his wife, Cheryl.
Prosecutors say Calvert smoked spice for about two weeks, including some that had been rolled up in pages of a Bible.
