Coal protesters are not coming to Gillette.
Rising Tide North America announced Tuesday in a press release that it was canceling its planned Aug. 2-10 protest, the “West By Northwest No Coal Exports Action Camp.”
“Due to unforeseen logistical issues, Rising Tide North America is pulling back from and canceling the West By Northwest No Coal Exports Action Camp,” according to the press release.
“We’re instead focusing our time and resources on supporting the Coal Exports Action in Helena, Mont. taking place Aug. 10-20. ‘The Coal Exports Action,’ at this juncture, is more strategic use of the Rising Tide’s time and resources as its focus is to affect a decision from the Montana Land Board on coal exports in the West,” the release said.
The protest was expected to bring from 50 to 200 protesters from around the country to the Powder River Basin.
Since news of the protest surfaced, coal supporters launched a local campaign “Friends of Coal-Wyoming” that had 11,842 members on its Facebook page Thursday morning.
Representatives from Rising Tide North America did not return calls or emails by press time.
