Women’s prison builds greenhouse

Posted 10/3/12

BILLINGS — Officials with the Montana Women’s Prison say a recently built greenhouse and a garden planned for next spring should produce enough vegetables to meet the prison’s needs and allow for substantial donations to the Billings Food Bank.

Deputy Warden Bob Paul said the 80-by-30-foot greenhouse was recently built to the north of the prison and they plan to plant a 7,500-square-foot outdoor garden next spring.

Paul said the garden and greenhouse will help offset food costs at the prison, provide a community service with food bank donations and give the women an opportunity to gain life skills and vocational training.

A similar greenhouse and garden are planned for the Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility in Miles City. Paul said the state allocated a total of $300,000 for both projects.
