Flags at the Wyoming State Capitol are lowered in honor of Wyoming treasurer Joe Meyer.
The veteran Republican politician died Saturday at the age of 71 after battling lung cancer and a lengthy illness.
He served as state treasurer since 2008 and was re-elected in 2010 after running unopposed. He was first elected to state office as Wyoming secretary of state in 1999. He also was Wyoming’s attorney general from 1987 to 1995.
Gov. Matt Mead said Meyer will be remembered for “his wisdom and his wit.” Friend and former college roommate Dick Cheney said he knew of no one who knew more about the workings of state government” than Meyer.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
