Wyoming Senate to consider bill to raise fuel tax

CHEYENNE — The Wyoming Senate is set to hear a proposal to raise state fuel taxes by a dime a gallon.
The bill would raise the tax from the existing rate of 14 cents a gallon up to 24 cents. The hike would raise about $70 million a year for the state highway system and local governments.
Supporters say the tax hike is necessary to provide a steady source of funding for the state highway system and local roads. But some opponents have said the Wyoming Department of Transportation should be more efficient and that working families can’t afford higher taxes.
The bill already has cleared the House. Although it’s on the agenda for consideration in the Senate on Tuesday, that list is subject to last-minute changes.
