CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Supreme Court has censured a Cheyenne defense attorney for offering to arrange a $15,000 payment to the mother of a child sexual abuse victim.
A court order released Wednesday states lawyer Dion Custis of Cheyenne represented a man who pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a girl. It states Custis offered payment from his client if the girl's parents would ask a judge not to impose prison time.
The order says Custis said the payment would be "future restitution" for the girl's counseling and said he would inform local prosecutors about it. The girl's parents alerted authorities and the judge later sentenced Custis' client to 12 to 22 years in prison.
Custis says he provides zealous defense for his clients but accepts the determination he made a mistake.
