FRESNO, Calif. — Derek Carr threw for three touchdowns to lead Fresno State to a 42-14 victory against Wyoming late Saturday night.

It was a tough night for the Cowboys, who lost for the sixth time this season and third time against a Mountain West Conference foe. Wyoming also is 0-for-4 on the road this season.

“I thought our kids came out and they competed,” Wyoming coach Dave Christensen said. “I told them after the game, you’ve got to come out ready to play at kickoff, and they didn’t. They came back in the second half and defense did a great job, shut them out basically in the second half.

“Offense had one interception for a touchdown. ... We were frazzled, We didn’t communicate well between protections and hot routes. We didn’t execute at a very high level and (have) a lot of work to get done.”

Robbie Rouse ran for 91 yards on 20 carries for the Bulldogs (5-3, 3-1 Mountain West). He became the first player in school history to surpass 4,000 yards rushing in a career.

Brett Smith threw two touchdown passes for the Cowboys (1-6, 0-3), but completed just 18 of 38 passes for 158 yards. He was intercepted by Phillip Thomas, who returned it for a TD — the fifth time Fresno State has done that this season, a school record.

The sophomore quarterback passed former Wyoming quarterback Randy Welniak to move into 10th place on Wyoming’s career passing yardage list in just his 18th career game. He now has 3,962 yards passing, while Welniak (1985-88) had 3,819 yards.

Carr was 32 of 48 for 268 yards, and Davante Adams had 11 receptions for 86 yards.

Wyoming defense held Carr to just 254 total yards. He came into the game averaging 303 yards per game.

“Derek Carr, he’s a good quarterback. We had a couple of assignment errors early, with our two starting safeties gone,” Christensen said. “We have a lot of guys in the secondary that are inexperienced. I think they made great adjustments as the game went on and did extremely well in the second half. ... I’m anxious to see the film, because I think we made some adjustments.”

In the first half, Rashad Evans caught a 6-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt 78 yards for a score as the Bulldogs built a 35-0 lead at intermission.

That was the first time Wyoming had allowed a punt return for a TD since Nov. 9, 2006, againt BYU.

Wyoming’s special teams didn’t perform well, allowing Fresno State to pull off big punt returns in the first half.

“We had guys out of position,” Christensen said. “You’ve got to make plays.”

Wyoming will host Boise State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Laramie.

State (6-1 overall). The game is scheduled to be broadcast by CBS Sports.
