Wyomingites flock across state line for Powerball

Posted 11/29/12

CHEYENNE — Wyoming residents flocked to Colorado to buy Powerball tickets in hope of winning the record $587 million jackpot.

It’s very unlikely that anybody from Wyoming is going to cash in on the jackpot. Powerball officials said Thursday that jackpot-winning tickets were sold in Missouri and Arizona but not in any of the Powerball states neighboring Wyoming.

Wyoming doesn’t have a lottery and is one of just a handful of states that also doesn’t participate in the two big multi-state lotteries, Powerball and Mega Millions.

The Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reports thousands of Wyoming residents drove to Colorado’s top-selling lottery retailer located just over the state line about 12 miles south of Cheyenne.

A Colorado lottery official estimated that ticket sales at the Borderline Cantina store were up six-fold compared to usual.
