My father used to say your life can change in a second. As a child, I couldn’t wrap my mind around this. A second? It seemed so fast.

But he was right. A second is all it takes for your life to change: a random seat taken next to a boy who you marry three years later; two lines on a pregnancy test; a phone call that begins “I’m going into hospice;” a notice from the governor to stay in your house. It just takes a second.
