David Ian Johnston
Former Gillette resident David Ian Johnston, 58, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from complications following cardiac surgery.
He was born Feb. 22, 1959, to Mary Elizabeth (Betty) (Gary) Johnston and Jesse Bernard (Powder) Johnston in Farmington, New Mexico.
He spent his childhood in Albuquerque and a lifelong career developed from judo training begun at the age of 6, followed by numerous other martial arts systems. He eventually earned five professional kickboxing world championship titles and a ninth-degree black belt.
Mr. Johnston was inducted into the Kenpo Hall of Fame and was honored with two inductions into the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles, where he appeared in several television shows and movies. He greatly enjoyed the film industry, even working behind the camera.
In 1988, he met and married Kathryn (Lanier) Johnston. Their daughter, Amy Elizabeth was born in 1990. Shortly thereafter they moved to Wyoming where, in 1993, their son Jesse Ian was born. His children were his pride and joy.
He and Kathryn divorced in 2014.
A man of faith, he loved all his family and pretty much everyone he ever met. He enjoyed making others smile and will be missed by friends the world over. He also loved adventure, a good challenge, singing and playing the harmonica. Even with all his talents he was a humble man and always considered his greatest gift his ability to teach.
Mr. Johnston is survived by and remembered with love by his mother; son; daughter; three sisters, Sheri Savonen, Dodie McVeety and Neteri Johnston; the mother of his children; and his nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father.
