WASHINGTON — If you write about highly charged political topics, such as gun control, you expect some angry disagreement. Often, however, much of the anger stems from a confusion between “is” and “ought” among people who mistake what you think will happen for what you think should.

Earlier, I wrote that conservatives need to get serious about stopping mass shootings. If they don’t, I said, and the killings continue at the current pace, then eventually America is going to end up where Australia and New Zealand did after public massacres: taking most semiautomatic guns, which automatically load another bullet in the chamber after firing, out of private hands.
