JACOB D. BURKHARD, 30, pleaded no contest July 1 to felony child abuse and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless endangering. District Judge James “Mike” Causey withheld judgement on the child abuse plea, pending a pre-sentence investigation. The guilty plea was accepted. Burkhard is suspected of causing bruising to the lips, upper legs and abdomen of his 3-month-old daughter, causing the infant to be airlifted to Colorado Children’s Hospital for treatment. The 3-month-old was taken to the Campbell County Health emergency room where police responded to. The infant’s mother said the child was found bruised after being with Burkhard for the day. Burkhard denied hurting the child at first, then admitted to pushing her legs into her stomach with too much force. He had used the technique to help her release gas and said he pressed a bottle into her mouth too hard, possibly causing the bruised lips. The infant had two rib fractures too, according to court documents.
